At the end of winter, on a night when the chill still lingered, I took a river cruise on a yakatabune with a group of friends along the Sumida River. The boat stopped briefly so the passengers could view fireworks being launched in the distance, and most of them gathered on that side. But I found myself drawn to the opposite view—quiet city lights stretching out beyond the river—and began sketching in that direction. From the stillness of the boat, the Tokyo skyline looked different than usual, the glow of the streetlights shimmering on the water’s surface. Just then, a breeze brushed past me, carrying with it the faint warmth of spring, and somewhere deep inside, I felt that winter was beginning to slip away. “Not interested in the fireworks?” the boatman asked, and I hesitated to answer. But in truth, it was that quiet light and peaceful scenery that lingered most in my memory. On weekends, I often walk one street behind the main roads in office districts. That day, I kept to those quiet paths. Suddenly, the narrow alley opened up to a bright space where tall trees swayed high above, rustling as if whispering among themselves. The area was clean and carefully maintained. Beyond it, tall buildings stood quietly, framing the sky into a neat rectangle. The sky felt wide, yet somehow enclosed. The still architecture, the graceful movement of the trees—it all felt like a walled garden in the heart of the city. Silent but full of presence, the space felt unmistakably like Tokyo. To avoid the evening shower, I stayed in a café for a while. Suddenly, after an hour or two, the rain stopped. Then, from the pedestrian bridge on my way home, I saw a scene bathed in the intense light of the setting sun. Everything was illuminated as the evening approached. The air, still damp from the rain, had become incredibly clear. In the farthest distance, rain clouds stretched across the sky. Behind me, a large drifting cloud began casting a wide shadow over the buildings a little farther away. For about 20 seconds, a beautiful contrast appeared across the entire landscape. On a very sunny day, I unexpectedly came across a space wedged between apartment buildings. It felt as though every building was facing away. Everything visible was made for people, yet there wasn't a single person in sight. I enjoy observing scenes where people should be present but aren't. At the end of August, I headed to a nearby waterfront to see the fireworks from a distant fireworks festival. However, due to the large crowd, I couldn’t see the fireworks well and decided to go back. On the way back, the outline of the bridge over the water and the neon of the electronic advertisements in the distance created a very strong contrast. I was more impressed by the dazzling neon colors than by the distant fireworks. I don't remember the location anymore, but there was an impressive cloud floating over the group of buildings beyond the highway, Beyond that, I could see a large light from the sun shining into a wide space. The slightly lonely population and the generous and abundant sunlight created a very mysterious atmosphere.
