While walking through this quiet side of Tokyo, a certain view suddenly catches my eye—one from which I mysteriously cannot look away. It might be a distant building window or the deep end of a narrow alley, where the details inside remain hidden. Yet, the very moment our eyes meet, I feel a sensation as if some important message is being quietly conveyed to me. In the end, I never drop by those places; I simply pass them by, drifting along with the flow of the crowd. A fragment of the city and my heart overlap for a fleeting second, only to part ways again. For me, the true intrigue of Tokyo lies in the accumulation of these faint, transient encounters. When I went to Shinjuku with a friend, we looked out over the city from the rooftop of a certain building. While my friend didn’t seem particularly interested in the view, standing behind her indifferent expression, I felt something different. In the humid evening air, the scene of clustered multi-tenant buildings felt oddly nostalgic—yet also very present.
