This piece was inspired by a woman I happened to notice while waiting for a train on a subway platform; amidst the bustling crowd, she possessed a unique aura, as if quietly blending into her own world. Most of my sketches and compositional studies come from places I encounter while walking through the city—locations I come across and then pass by. It is the impression of those brief encounters that gives me the energy to create. At the same time, there are a few places I return to again and again. This work is based on a view from a gently sloped, well-kept grassy embankment, looking across to buildings on the opposite side. It is a place where the wind moves freely; although the area is paved, few people come here. Because of that, I often spend time there, quietly making sketches and studies at a slow pace. This piece is based on one of those drawings. This is a cat that greeted me first when I visited a friend’s home. At first, it watched me intently from behind the wall, almost as if it were on guard, which gave me a slightly mysterious impression. But we quickly became friendly, and by the time I was leaving, it was sleeping right beside me. I often find myself thinking that the buildings before my eyes—places where people live, come and go, and light their rooms at night—will one day grow old and eventually stand empty. When I encountered the scene in this work, I was reminded of that quiet vision. Beneath the familiar, expansive sky, even the largest structures inevitably change with time and fade away. Yet this does not feel melancholic to me. In the freezing cold, with the air sharp enough to sting, the streetlights and the glow from windows seem to shine in a strangely special way. The sky over Tokyo is not very clear, and there are only a few stars. Instead, the lights on the ground gather and quietly illuminate one another, careful not to interfere too much. There is something like watching each other from a distance, and I find that atmosphere—created by artificial structures—somehow intriguing. I painted a cat that my family used to have when I was little. She was a female cat, and she was very gentle and kind. When she slept, she always lay on her back, showing her white belly with a little bit of light brown fur mixed in. Whenever I saw her sleeping like that, I would run over and gently rub her tummy—I still remember that really well. Sometimes I would quietly sketch her while she was asleep. She’s no longer with us now, but whenever I look at those sketches, I can still picture her sleeping with that soft, peaceful expression on her face. There’s something kind of dozy about the buildings in this area that always feels very Shinjuku to me. You can barely see the sky, and the buildings are all packed together, facing different directions, creating these weird gaps and shapes between them. The neon signs are always bright, but right next to that glow there’s this constant Shinjuku-style dimness. It’s not a particularly clean place, and it’s definitely not calm. Sometimes I honestly wonder why so many young people are drawn here and keep passing through it. But before I know it, the image of Shinjuku is already stuck in my head, popping up every now and then. I guess Shinjuku just has its own kind of pull. I often display tulips as a single flower in a vase. Compared to arranging them in a bouquet, a single tulip allows their soft, rounded charm to stand out more clearly, which is why I find this style especially appealing. Placing just one flower also seems to bring a quiet sense of calm to the surrounding space. As I sit in a still room, observing the flower while painting, I become aware of how this single bloom gently softens the entire atmosphere. When I went to Shinjuku with a friend, we looked out over the city from the rooftop of a certain building. While my friend didn’t seem particularly interested in the view, standing behind her indifferent expression, I felt something different. In the humid evening air, the scene of clustered multi-tenant buildings felt oddly nostalgic—yet also very present. At the end of winter, on a night when the chill still lingered, I took a river cruise on a yakatabune with a group of friends along the Sumida River. The boat stopped briefly so the passengers could view fireworks being launched in the distance, and most of them gathered on that side. But I found myself drawn to the opposite view—quiet city lights stretching out beyond the river—and began sketching in that direction. From the stillness of the boat, the Tokyo skyline looked different than usual, the glow of the streetlights shimmering on the water’s surface. Just then, a breeze brushed past me, carrying with it the faint warmth of spring, and somewhere deep inside, I felt that winter was beginning to slip away. “Not interested in the fireworks?” the boatman asked, and I hesitated to answer. But in truth, it was that quiet light and peaceful scenery that lingered most in my memory.
